As most Naruto fans can attest, the release of this movie (in America) was highly anticipated for a good year and a half. I guess thats with any popular Anime movie that we wait to get subbed into English, but this was even more anticipated because of raised expectations from the Shippuuden world. But the question remains, does the second Shippuuden movie live up to the high standard set by the series? Eh, sorta.

“Bonds” follows a pretty formulaic plot, as far as Naruto movies go. Something goes wrong, Naruto is sent on a mission with Sakura and whoever else is picked to have screen time this time around (Hinata being the third team member in this case), an important secondary character is introduced (the spunky tomboy Amaru), bad stuff happens in between, fighting, the bad guy is revealed, fighting, Naruto gets his butt kicked, passionate speech, epic final battle, the end. Now of course the movie is more complex then this, but this is merely the outline of the plot that most of these Naruto movies follow, and to be honest, thats fine with me. It works. One shouldn’t go into these movies expecting to see some huge incredible story unfold. Its fan service, and fans love seeing these ninjas do what they do best: fight.

The movie was by no means bad, but as is with many movies, it didn’t live up to the hype that was provided by the preview. I think the reason this was as much of a disappointment as it was is because the biggest thing fans looked forward to when watching this was seeing Sauske in action with Naruto. Anyone who has followed the series knows that Sauske has been absent for a very long time, and has only recently been getting any airtime. About the time this movie came out, we were starving for a little Sauske action, and we expected to see it in “Bonds”. Well, we werent totally disappointed, Sauske definitely was in it, and he did his thing, but he’s in the movie for all of 10 minutes total. He appears ominously at the beginning, briefly in the middle, and in the epic final battle. Other then that, no Sauske. Its kind of a big jip, but what can you do?

There is one aspect to this movie that has a light and dark side to it. Its a big part of the movie so I wont spoil it for those who have yet to see it, but basically the writers decided to incorporate something that was had the potential to be a VERY interesting story in itself, outside of the movie format. The plus is that it does in fact give some depth to the movie and makes it more then just a huge ninja fight fest. The downside however, is that using it in this movie eliminates the possibility of using it in the series for future story development, and I would really love to see that flushed out more. When you see the movie, you’ll know what I’m talking about immediately.

There is plenty of action, so no worries there, and all of your favorite Konoha characters are around for the fun, but its nothing you haven’t seen before. The Sky ninja thing is kinda interesting for all of a few minutes, but they wear out their welcome in the opening sequence of the movie in the long, drawn out attack on Konoha (it took almost 10 minutes for them to do!)

Anyway, bottom line, this is a pretty decent movie with moderate replay value. At the very least you will be entertained, because aside from the action, there is plenty of goofy Naruto goodness to get you laughing, enough action to keep you a little hyped, and enough twists, turns, and depth that the story will keep you from falling asleep in the slow moments. Despite it’s shortcomings, I like it. 4/5 stars.

This movie was soo awesome!! Naruto and Sasuke join together to defeat the enemy! They work together as friends again if only for a short while!! Sorry for the lemon, but it was soo cool. I definately recommend watching it. Dattebayo!

War Arrow is one of those Westerns that has fallen through the cracks over time. One reason is that there were so many of them. Another reason is that its male star, Jeff Chandler, was unexcited in the early stages of superstardom before his untimely death in 1962. Another reason may be that War Arrow would never be considered one of the all-time large Westerns.

But War Arrow is also a very fun, interesting Western with a tall cast and qualified execution. Chandler plays a cavalry officer sent to an outpost surrounded by besieging Kiowa Indians. Joined by fellow soldiers Charles Drake and Noah Beery, Chandler immediately annoys the fort’s good officer (played by John McIntire with his usual solid but natural acting style) . Chandler accomplishes this by suggested that neighboring Seminole Indians would execute a perfect weapon against the warring Kiowas.

Chandler also immediately becomes smitten with O’Hara, a widow of a recently killed cavalry soldier. O’Hara veers wildly from being madly in savor with Chandler to being confused about being a widow in fancy so soon after her husband’s death.

Chandler begins to express the Seminoles to fight, all the while realizing that McIntire is a rival for O’Hara’s affections. Meanwhile, the Kiowas are working toward an attack on the fort.

The site moves along crisply, with a number of nicely staged action pieces. Everyone does their job well and War Arrow is more than worth a Western-lover’s time.

While “B” westerns died out in the early 50s, with the rising popularity of television, Hollywood continued to form dozens of “A” westerns with name stars and more adult situations. Some were moral classics like “Shane” and “The Searchers”–some were impartial “product”–something to beget half of a double bill. “War Arrow” falls into the latter category.

Jeff Chandler stars as a US cavalry officer who tries to employ a “pleasant” Indian tribe–the Seminoles–against a “poor” tribe of marauding Kiowas. Let’s not acquire into “political correctness”–the film is over 50 years ancient. Not only does he have his hands corpulent with these Native Americans, the commanding officer of the local fort, played by a gruff John McIntyre, resents his presence and “progressive” ideas. A handsome “widow”–Maureen O’Hara–is trapped at the fort, and she soon has Jeff practically drooling over her. Since John wants her too, the “rapport” between the two men plunges further downhill. The movie toddles along for about an hour, before a climactic attack on the fort by those bad Kiowas–led by Jay Silverheels, taking a rupture from his “noble guy” Tonto image!

Jeff Chandler, with his piercing eyes and prematurely grey hair, gives the film more dignity than it deserves. He was a qualified actor, and his early death deprived the movies of a blooming leading man. Maureen O’Hara has always been a magnificent woman–that red hair, those flashing eyes, the fiery “Irish colleen” personality–yet, in this film, she seems to be going through the motions. Perhaps after “The Unruffled Man”, movies like this were not exactly captivating for her. Amusing relief is provided by Noah Beery as one of Mr. Chandler’s sidekicks–Charles Drake is the other. Suzan Ball sizzles as an “Indian maid”, while Henry Brandon is solid as her father, the Seminole chief–not the first or last time that Mr. Brandon would play a Native American. Another member of the tribe, with totally understandable “hots” for Ms. Ball, is played by Dennis Weaver–not too well–a first-rate thing that “Gunsmoke” was fair around the corner! “B” western actor, Jim Bannon, is also featured–he may bill himself as “James” here, but his acting is as wooden and one-dimensional as ever.

The DVD exhibits a colourful, if slightly hazy, full-screen narrate, and mono sound.

I bought “War Arrow” because I like westerns, Jeff Chandler and Maureen O’Hara–but sometimes, even with a lot of expedient ingredients, you can wind up with a second-rate stew! I would file this one under “disappointing”.

Having never watched the Sopranos (heresy, I know), I didn’t have any preconceived notions of what type of person Edie Falco should or should not be playing. Many of my friends exclaim me that the character of Nurse Jackie is a far yowl from her Carmelo Soprano alter-ego.

Jackie is a bulky time nurse in a public hospital in Novel York City. Like most nurses and emergency medical workers, she is overworked and underpaid and trying to gain do with what life has handed to her. On the surface, she is hardworking nurse who is a loving mother of two itsy-bitsy girls and a devoted wife to Kevin Payton who runs a local bar. Scratch the surface unbiased a petite bit and the perfect facade peels away to narrate a drug addicted adulterer who regularly breaks the laws in order to suit her maintain perceived morals.

Nurse Jackie tackles quite a few heavy subjects during its initial season including assisted suicide, underage children caring for their parents, as well as the rigors of raising children who aren’t quite perfect. Medical dramas are a dime a dozen and the comedy versions honest always seem to be lacking substance, however the staff writers of Nurse Jackie do a masterful job of mixing the heavy subjects in with very lighthearted, almost slapstick humor.

While the Peyton household hasn’t been expanded on very great (honestly you could replace the husband and two slight girls with bricks and you probably wouldn’t inspect worthy disagreement), the hospital staff shines in every blueprint. Doctor O’Hara is the archetypal rich doctor as well as the “straight man” for most of Jackie’s exploits. While her character was explored a shrimp bit in season one, there wasn’t a lot invested yet. Doctor Cooper is the hotshot doctor straight out of Med School looking to do his sign. He’s cute and naive and looking to develop obvious everyone thinks of him as their buddy while trying to become a serious doctor at the same time. Zoey is the nurse counterpart to Cooper; the truly naive nursing student straight from school who hasn’t had her spirit crushed by the dependable world. The rest of the hospital staff, Miss Akalitus, Mo-Mo, and Thor, all play toothsome comedic foils throughout the season. The cast list would not be complete without the mention of Eddie, the hospital pharmacist who “supplies” prescription pills to Jackie because he believes he is doing his duty as a capable boyfriend. Eddie unfortunately does not know that he is being veteran by Jackie who has a joyful family at home as well as a husband with whom we are led to bear she is quiet in adore with.

Fans of shows like ER will like the drama, however it should be celebrated that Nurse Jackie is relatively light on the medical science side of the house. While drugs are described, procedures mentioned, there is very dinky step-by-step-to-recovery type documentation on a per patient level. You’ll examine gunshot wounds approach in, chest tubes inserted, CBC and toxicity reports ordered but not a lot of breakdown into why a doctor orders which test, why they should contemplate at alternatives, etc like in ER. Nurse Jackie was written in order to revolve around the nurse not the doctor, and as such there is a considerable higher emphasis placed on patient care rather than unprejudiced medical procedures.

My only gripe with Nurse Jackie is that there is zero conflict resolution throughout the entire season. Season one ended with a cliffhanger and as with all other Showtime/HBO episodic shows, the next season will not premier until sometime in the next year. All of the “will she win caught? ” questions that you produce from episode one will mild be there after you enact episode twelve (with a few dozen extra questions thrown in by then for apt measure) . Other than that, Nurse Jackie is a mammoth present, and I instruct that the fact that I want Season Two to originate good now! attests to how addicting the series is.

For those looking for conflict resolution or some sort of psychological undressing of Jackie - you have the disagreeable prove. Jackie is too hard for that sort of Oprah candy. She has been hardened by the life she has lived in the Emergency Room. Like a soldier on the frontlines of battle, she is undergoing horrific trauma on a daily basis with no time to process or collect healthier ways of coping. Clearly she is spiraling towards some sort of smash, which she is doing her best to stem off with drugs. But it is inevitable. This is what drives the reveal - how discontinuance can the writers retract Jackie to the brink but not push her over? (When and if they do push her over that brink and into rehad, the present will lose its momentum - not positive what season two will ogle like.) I don’t assume the writers intended her to be some sort of “character” tied up in a shipshape bow of conflict, conflict resolution - hopefully in the third act. This display is more like The Wire, it intends to demonstrate life as it is in determined segments of our society and people, flawed people, doing whatever it takes to deal with it and cope - not always successfully. An Emergency Room in Queens is the belly of this beast that is our healthcare system and society - characters like Jackie are intended to assume the sickness that is the system.

I have had this movie since it was released and impartial recently upgraded to a DVD version. It has a unbelievable spot and substantial characters. This was before (sorta) Brendan Fraser got that outrageous type cast as George of the Jungle and the like, and proves that he is a talented actor as well. Moira Kelly is also astounding as the sexy coed obsessed with sex (I recommend The Cutting Edge for Moira fans) . Definetly an A+ script with A+ actors. Droll, witty, sentimental and a feel helpful movie.

With Honors certainly has its problems. It’s predictable and more than occasionally cheesy. But the cast earn it well worth watching. They do their best with the lines they’re given, and all of them actually act–facial expressions and physical cues and changes in tone of affirm instead of unprejudiced reciting the lines. Brendan Fraser’s character visibly relaxes as the sage progresses, and Joe Pesci’s performance is simply mammoth.

More to the point (for me, anyway), this is the only “college movie” I can select seeing where the student protagonists are actually concerned both about academics and about attempting to grow as people, rather than being on a perpetual quest for spring break/girls/boys/beer/all of the above. Even better, the writer attempts to be serious about student worries instead of taking the easier route of mocking the nerds. When the script comes down off its soapbox, it’s a pretty ensemble note about the high cost of trying not to need other people. Beneath his defiant exterior, Simon (Joe Pesci) is terrified by the family he abandoned; Monty (Brendan Fraser) hides unhurried academic achievement because his grades can’t trot out on him like his father did; Courtney (Moira Kelly) settles for an empty physical relationship with a good-looking jerk because her emotions are tied up in her efforts to near out to Monty. Ultimately, I liked With Honors less because of the warm fuzzy honest point it was trying to manufacture than because I liked the characters. Most unusually for any movie, I could record to most of the characters. Cheers to the writer and especially the actors for making their characters true.

We all love “Rudolph,” and “Frosty,” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” “Little Drummer Boy” still makes me weep like a baby and the little known “Cricket on the Hearth” is a buried gem. I can even accept the odd addition of “Mr Magoo” (which is not a Rankin-Bass product) to the collection, but I have no idea who thought it was a good idea to put the NON-Rankin Bass Frosty special here instead of the “real” Frosty sequel: “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland.”

Don’t be fooled. “Frosty Returns” is NOT by Rankin Bass and does not feature Jackie Vernon as voice of the venerable snowman or Karen the little girl or the story of Jack Frost trying to steal the hat so all the children will appreciate him instead of Frosty. “Frosty Returns” is garbage and does not belong surrounded by these other true Christmas classics. But if you don’t mind that and Magoo, it is a great collection of some of the TRUE holiday classics.Frosty’s Winter Wonderland/Twas the Night Before Christmas

Classic Media brings us 7 Christmas specials in one gorgeous package in its “Original Christmas Classics” DVD collection. The headliners of this set are the three greatest Rankin/Bass Christmas TV specials of all-time: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town! In addition to these, we are treated to “The Little Drummer Boy”, “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol”, “Cricket on the Hearth”, and “Frosty Returns”. Plus, a CD of holiday music selections is even included as a bonus!

Disc One features everyone’s favorite Rankin/Bass special, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Based on the beloved song, it’s the stop-motion “animagic” classic from 1964 about a little reindeer born with a nose that glows red! Teased about his nose as a child, Rudolph runs away from Santa’s village and makes new friends along the way but also encounters the frightening Bumble snow-beast! Then, when a fog comes up to threaten Santa’s Christmas Eve flight, it’s only Rudolph’s nose that can save the day! Featuring unforgettable songs from Burl Ives (who plays Sam the Snowman) and others, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” has become a holiday tradition loved by millions!

Also on Disc One is “Cricket on the Hearth.” Introduced by Danny Thomas and starring the voices of himself, his daughter Marlo, Roddy McDowall, Hans Conried, Paul Frees, and more, this 1967 traditionally animated special is a musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic. It’s the story of a toymaker and his daughter who befriend a helpful cricket that saves the day after the family falls on hard times. “Cricket on the Hearth” is a lesser known Rankin/Bass production and not as endearing as their bigger hits, but it is still a nice holiday viewing you probably haven’t seen before.

Disc Two holds a classic that is nearly as beloved as Rudolph, “Frosty the Snowman”. This 1969 classic is traditionally animated and probably Rankin/Bass’s best work in 2D. The charming character designs, voices, music, and simple story are absolutely wonderful. Based on another classic song, this is the story of a snowman that comes to life when the children who built him add a discarded magic hat. Unfortunately, snowmen can’t last forever unless they are in a place that is always snowy, and the nasty Professor Hinkle, the frustrated magician who threw out his hat, wants the hat back now that he knows it holds real magical power! Hosted by an animated Jimmy Durante, “Frosty the Snowman” is such a treat that it even inspired three 2D sequels so far, though only “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland”, from the same creators and with Jackie Vernon back as Frosty’s voice, is really good. Disc Two also includes the only DVD bonus feature in this set, a Frosty pencil test.

Also on Disc Two is one of the more recent and very disappointing sequels, “Frosty Returns.” Truthfully, I don’t think this can be called an official sequel, as I don’t think Rankin/Bass had anything to do with this 1992 rip-off. Surprisingly, this one is from the creators of the wonderful Peanuts specials, sans Charles Schultz, but it has none of that magic. “Frosty Returns”, which depicts a Frosty voiced by John Goodman and with nothing in common with the original aside from being made of snow, is hosted by an animated (and for some reason miniature) Jonathan Winters in an attempt to mimic the host-character style of the Rankin/Bass faves. He presents the story of a town that is becoming snow-free thanks to a businessman’s spray can invention, “Summer Wheeze.” Frosty and his friends go on a mission to prove to the townsfolk that snow can actually be a good thing, but all in all it’s a story that is pretty uninvolving and forgettable. What a shame they never couple the original Frosty with “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland”. Unfortunately, you have to buy the other boxed set to get that one.

Disc Three features what is, in my opinion, the definitive version of how Santa became Santa. Well, along with “Santa Claus, the Movie” anyway. “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” is the name of the special, and it’s the third of the three big-name classics in this DVD set. The 1970 animagic film, hosted by a stop-motion Fred Astaire, gives us the story of Santa being left at the doorstep of a toymaking elf family when he was a baby, being raised by them and amongst the forest animals, going on missions to deliver toys to the children of Sombertown, meeting Winter the warlock and Jessica, the future Mrs. Claus, and going up against the awful Burgermeister Meisterburger. This charming take on Santa’s origins includes the voices of Mickey Rooney as Santa Claus, Keenan Wynn as Winter, and the great Paul Frees in several roles. Like most Rankin/Bass holiday classics, this is based on a classic song.

The remaining two holiday specials are also included on Disc Three. They are the lesser known but still much loved “The Little Drummer Boy,” a somewhat dark Rankin/Bass animagic tale from 1968 about an orphaned drummer boy who hates people and only loves his animal friends until a visit to the original nativity scene shows him the light, and 1962’s “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol,” which presents the classic, nearsighted cartoon character as an actor in a Broadway production of his own version of “A Christmas Carol.” Both specials are charming and appreciated inclusions in this DVD set.

Lastly, there’s the CD, which is a mixed bag of 7 Christmas songs. They include a very brief “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” from Burl Ives, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” from Bobby Rydell, “A Holly Jolly Christmas” from Burl Ives, “Silver and Gold” from Burl Ives, “Let it Snow” from Chicago, “Winter Wonderland” from Jewel, and “Merry Christmas Baby” from Otis Redding. The CD is an okay addition, but a 4th disc of more holiday specials or more DVD bonus features would have been preferred, or even a genuine soundtrack to one or more of the included specials.

Overall, this set is a must own for the Christmas classics lover, and my only major complaint is how hard it is to remove the discs from the lovely packaging. I also highly recommend the following DVDs and DVD sets: Christmas Television Favorites (featuring other Rankin/Bass faves and the Grinch!), Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas, Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas, Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, Disney’s Classic Holiday Stories, Peanuts Classic Holiday Collection, The Happy Elf, Garfield Holiday Celebrations, Elf, A Muppet Family Christmas, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Warner Bros. Classic Holiday Collection, MGM Holiday Classics Collection, Santa Claus (1960), It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street (1947), A Christmas Story, The Nativity, A Christmas Carol (1951), Scrooged, Santa Claus the Movie, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Scrooge (1935), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (live-action), One Magic Christmas, Babes in Toyland (Disney), National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Ernest Saves Christmas, A Chipmunk Christmas, the Santa Clause films, A Flintstones Christmas Carol, Benji’s Very Own Christmas Story, Sabrina the Animated Series: A Witchmas Carol, and more! There aren’t too many productions from television that one can call “noble,” but Ken Burns’ The Civil War qualifies. Burns uses photographs, music, speech, maps and historical context to tell the story of the second most formative event in the nation’s history. And since in those days people wrote…diaries, letters, journals…there is the written record not just of the great leaders, the politicians and generals, but of the wives and sweethearts, the nurses and doctors, newspaper editors and farmers. Most of all there are the words of the soldiers. Burns shows the importance and the sweep of the war, but in part he does it through the lives of average people caught up in events they may not have completely comprehended, but which they believed in.

If the words themselves have power, so do the voices. Burns recruited great voices, some actors, some not, to speak the words, distinctive voices that give great resonance to what we see. Julie Harris as Mary Chestnut, Charlie McDowell, a Virginia reporter, as Sam Watkins, Arthur Miller as William Sherman, Jason Robards as Grant, Studs Terkel as Benjamin Butler, Sam Waterston as Lincoln, and many others. He has David McCullough as the narrator. McCullough, an outstanding historian and writer, does a wonderful job. Burns also uses a number of historians to underline key points. Foremost, in my view, is Shelby Foote. Foote is the author of the epic three-volume Civil War. With his Southern accent, common sense and soft irony, he’s a fascinating raconteur.

The program is never dry or dull. It is gripping and emotional. Both sides felt they were fighting for a pure cause. What is particularly touching is that, as a people, we had not yet lost much of the capacity for simple, unadorned, unembarrassed feelings, whether it be patriotism for one’s country or love for one’s wife. I challenge anyone to read this letter from Sullivan Ballou, a 32-year-old soldier in the Union Army, to his 24-year-old wife, and not sit stunned with emotion. Ballou was killed in the first battle of Bull Run a week later.

July 14, 1861

Camp Clark, Washington

My very dear Sarah:

The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days-perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more . . .

I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing-perfectly willing-to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt . . .

Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.

The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them for so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me-perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my little Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness . . .

But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again . . .

The program flows over 11 hours on five discs. In addition to the documentary, the discs are stuffed with background information…maps, documents, biographies and additional interviews. This is a superb production and is worth every penny.

Ken Burns has established himself as one of the greats in terms of historical documentaries. The Civil War is Mr. Burns’ greatest work. The attention to detail brings the history to life. Mr. Burns does an excellent job of bringing humanity to the tragic time in America. With the use of solder’s and family letters it is evident what a difficult time it was to be an American. Originally aired on PBS in September of 1990, nearly fifteen years later the series remains the ultimate narrative about the United States darkest time.

The series is finally released on DVD. While the price is a little high the amazing quality of the series makes the cost very reasonable. Ken Burns’ Civil War is required for any Civil War historian’s collection. The series is also a great way for those wishing to learn more about the Civil War. I would recommend this to anyone that loves historical documentaries. It does not get any better than The Civil War - A Film by Ken Burns.
